Lyons' Cemetery Plot

The Marong cemetery is typical of many Australian country cemetries. It is basically an open field with graves from the mid 1800s to the present day. The cemetery is located on Cemetery Road (off the Calder Alternative Highway) about 3 km south of the town.

The Lyon's plot is quite substantial and is the final resting place of both Patrick and Ellen Lyons, their daughters Brigid, Kathleen and Mary Ann, their son Thomas, their son-in-law William Armstrong and Ellen's parents, William and Mary (Ann) Ryan.mThe inscription on the headstone reads:

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF MY DEAR HUSBAND PATRICK LYONS DIED 11th OCT. 1911, ALSO MY DAUGHTER BRIGID DIED 14th MARCH 1921, AND MY INFANT DAUGHTER KATHLEEN, ALSO MY DAUGHTER MARY ANN ARMSTRONG DIED 26th JAN. 1908, AND HER HUSBAND WILLIAM ARMSTRONG DIED 28th SEPT. 1891, AND MY PARENTS WILLIAM AND ANN RYAN ALSO ELLEN LYONS DIED 6th SEPT. 1930, AND THOMAS PATRICK LYONS DIED 23rd JUNE 1959. REQUIESCANT IN PACE ERECTED BY ELLEN LYONS IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE ABOVE W&R QUIN                   BENDIGO

Interestingly, the inscribed date of death for Patrick Lyons is incorrect. According to his death certificate, he died on 27 October 2011.
