Lyons' Land Holdings at Marong

Patrick Lyons' success on the Bendigo goldfields enabled him to purchase a farming property in the Marong district in 1865. The first listing for Patrick Lyons in the records of Marong Council is found in 1866. The property became known as "Ellendale" and was expanded over the years, increasing from about 515 acres in 1865 to 834 acres in 1912.

At the time of the sale, the Ellendale holdings comprised the following areas of land in the Parish of Leichardt:

• Section 13, Crown Allotment 2 - 44 acres 1 rood 16 perches
• Section 13, Crown Allotment 3 - 44 acres 1 rood 26 perches
• Section 13, Crown Allotment 4 - 22 acres 3 roods 8 perches
• Section 13, Crown Allotment 5 - 65 acres 0 roods 23 perches
• Section 13, Crown Allotment 6 - 61 acres 2 roods 23 perches
• Section 13, Crown Allotment 12 - 37 acres 2 roods 16 perches
• Section 13, Crown Allotment 14 - 50 acres 1 rood 36 perches
• Section 13, Crown Allotment 15 - 49 acres 0 roods 10 perches
• Section 11, Crown Allotment 1 - 32 acres 2 roods 1 perches
• Section 11, Crown Allotment 2 - 76 acres 2 roods 5 perches
• Crown Allotment 91B (known as "Duke's Flat") - 288 acres 3 roods 19 perches

Section 13 Crown Allotment 11 was listed as belonging to the Lyons in 1867 but not in 1912.

The property was located in an area of relatively flat landforms with an annual rainfall of about 500 mm.
